Keep it 100: Black History, Family Wellness, and the Legacy of Reading Together

Feb 07, 2026 by Donica' Beckett, founder

Hey, Take Care Tribe! Let's keep it 100. Black History Month isn’t just about what we remember. It’s about what we pass on.

As we commemorate 100 years of honoring Black history, we find ourselves reflecting less on dates and displays—and more on the everyday spaces where legacy truly lives. Our greatest inheritance isn’t confined to museums, textbooks, or milestone moments. It lives in our homes.

It lives in the quiet moments. In families, reading together on the couch. In bedtime stories passed from one generation to the next. In books that reflect our brilliance, our resilience, and our joy.

Legacy Begins at Home: Why Reading Together Matters in Black Families

For generations, storytelling has been a cornerstone of Black culture. Long before our stories were welcomed into mainstream spaces, we preserved them through oral tradition, shared wisdom, and collective memory. Reading together today continues that sacred practice.

When families make time to read together, something powerful happens. Children don’t just learn words; they learn who they are. They see themselves reflected in stories of courage, creativity, leadership, and love. They understand that their lives are part of a much larger narrative, one rooted in strength and possibility.

Literacy Is Wellness: The Connection Between Reading and Family Well-Being

At Complete Package Publishing and Communications, we believe literacy is wellness.

Reading together strengthens minds, supports emotional development, and builds confidence. It creates opportunities for meaningful conversations, strengthens family bonds, and nurtures a sense of belonging. Literacy supports mental health, academic success, and cultural pride—all essential components of family wellness.

When children see reading modeled at home, it becomes more than an activity. It becomes a value. A habit. A source of connection.

Preserving Culture Through Pages: Books as Tools for Identity and Pride

When we open a book together, we’re not just sharing stories—we’re preserving culture.

We’re affirming identity. We’re honoring the past while preparing the future. We’re planting seeds of confidence that can last a lifetime.

This is especially important during Black History Month, when we are called not only to reflect on where we’ve been, but to consider how we are shaping what comes next. The stories we place in our children’s hands today influence how they see themselves—and what they believe is possible tomorrow.

Continuing the Legacy: Publishing Stories That Strengthen Families

We’re proud to share that this work continues in our books, which are intentionally designed to support family wellness, cultural pride, and the power of shared reading across generations.

These stories are designed to spark conversation, encourage togetherness, and celebrate the richness of our collective legacy, because representation matters, and access to meaningful stories is essential.

A Call to Read, Reflect, and Remember

This month, let’s honor our ancestors by nurturing our family's health and wellness.

Let’s slow down. Let’s read together. Let’s create moments that matter.

Because Black history isn’t just something we look back on—it’s something we live, share, and pass forward every single day.

Our Mission at Complete Package Publishing and Communications

At Complete Package Publishing and Communications, our mission is bold and intentional: to create, publish, and amplify stories that strengthen families, affirm cultural identity, and support lifelong wellness through literacy.

We believe books are more than products; they are tools for healing, connection, and empowerment. Through culturally grounded storytelling and intentional publishing, we are committed to ensuring Black families see themselves reflected with dignity, truth, and hope.

As we look toward the future, our work remains rooted in legacy and guided by purpose. We publish with generations in mind, because when families read together, they grow together, and when our stories are honored, our communities thrive.
